What is a Community Kitchen?
A community kitchen is a group of people who get together regularly to cook and eat together or cook and bring food home. Groups most often cook in community centers, neighbourhood houses, apartment building or hotel common rooms, schools, housing co-ops or people’s homes. Kitchens meet once a month or once a week…whatever the group decides.

Community Kitchens can bake, cook, make sourkraut or jam, can peaches or pears…whatever the need and desire is in the kitchen. Community Kitchens are not limited to just cooking. Canning is a great kitchen activity to do with a small group of people. For years, I have canned with my mom and my brother regularly. We get a visit in while producing a few cases of canned pears or whatever. For a canning session that will yield everyone at least 12 jars of fruit – block off about a 4 hour period. We generally do a 9am-1pm canning session on a Saturday or Sunday in the summer/fall.
I would like to take a canning workshop. I’m having trouble finding any in Vancouver, except for one scheduled in September at the False Creek Community Centre. I, ideally, would like to attend one sooner and in my general neighbourhood-East Van-as long as it is affordable. Any recommendations?
Hi Jess,
Kiwassa Neighborhood House (at 2425 Oxford Street in Vancouver) has a Canning Kitchen and its open to anyone who wants to come if there is room. Organizers calculate the cost of each jar and participants pay for what they can take home. Click here for info on the Kiwassa Neighborhood Canning Kitchen
You can also see a list of cooking and nutritional skill building programs in BC that we are aware of that provide instruction on Canning and Food Preservation on our website. To limit the results to a city in BC, click on the link on the words “Refine Your Search” in the upper left-hand side and then in the next screen, select the city you want from the pull-down menu.
We’ll announce more canning workshops on this site as we hear about them.
Thanks for asking!
